Private lives should never belong to the public

Politicians have to pander to the relentless appetite for disclosure. But knowing too much can lead to bad mistakes.

A friend of mine who works in psychotherapy has seen politicians as patients. He tells me that they are in a constant muddled internal debate about what to show to the world; in which of the three boxes to place the parts of their lives, the public, the private and — above all — the public/private.
